“The two primary sources for transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, include person-to-person spread by respiratory droplets and when the virus becomes aerosolized in a confined space such as a classroom, home, business or workplace. It becomes critically important to determine if the local environment is safe and the risk for infection is as low as theoretically possible.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the AirAnswers device work?

The device uses ionic propulsion to silently circulate air within it, leaving ultra-fine particles bonded to the steel electrodes on the collection cartridge.

How big is the device?

It is 6.91 inches by 4.93 inches and weighs about 0.5 pounds.

What is included with the AirAnswers device?

The AirAnswers device comes with a power cord, user manual, four cartridges and four prepaid shipping envelopes for returning the cartridges.

Does the device have a filter?

No. Particulates are collected on a stainless steel cartridge.

Is the device loud?

No. The AirAnswers device has no moving parts and therefore is silent.

Does AirAnswers come with a warranty?

Yes, AirAnswers comes with a limited warranty.

What size particulate can the device measure?

The device can measure ultra-fine particles down to 0.1 microns in size.

Why are ultra-fine particles potentially harmful?

Ultra-fine particles are potentially harmful because they not only enter your lungs, but also can enter your bloodstream. This can exacerbate allergy and asthma symptoms, and could potentially be fatal.

How do I operate the device?

Operating AirAnswers is easy. Simply remove the device from the box, insert a cartridge and plug it into a standard outlet. Let it run for the appropriate time for your chosen assessment.

Where do I place the device when testing?

If you would like to test a whole indoor environment, we recommend placing the device on a piece of furniture in a centralized location near an air recycle point. If you would like to test a specific room, place the device in the room and keep the door closed for the entire testing period.

Can the device be used in high-dust areas like factories?

Yes. Because the air sampling technology captures airborne particles on steel electrodes rather than filters, there is no chance the device or internal cartridge will clog.

How often should a space be tested?

For virus detection or monitoring, we recommend weekly testing. For allergens and molds, we recommend quarterly testing.

How many devices do I need?

For commercial spaces, we recommend one device per open area being tested or about 1 device per 2500 square feet.

How long will it take to get my results back?

Virus results have a 2-3 day turnaround time. Allergens and mold results come back in five days (unless you choose to expedite for an additional fee).

Does opening doors and windows impact SARS-CoV-2 testing?

We recommend keeping exterior windows and doors closed during testing if they are typically closed during normal operations, as external airflow dilutes indoor levels of SARS-CoV-2.

Do I need to clean the AirAnswers device after removing the cartridge?

No. Inside the device is a high voltage wire. When you remove the cartridge from the device, there is an internal “brush” that gently removes any particulate matter from the wire. It is completely safe and easy to do.

Is AirAnswers FDA/EPA/CDC approved?

Because we work with environmental and not human samples, there is no FDA approval for our niche. The EPA certifies technology and products used in disinfection and cleaning, so EPA approval is not applicable. We follow CDC guidelines for safe handling of SARS-CoV-2 and use their certified primers and probes.

What is the difference between AirAnswers and a particle counter such as one made by TSI?

Particulate counters detect and count particulates, or matter, in the air, but they don't tell you what those particulates are. AirAnswers does, thus providing more actionable information. You can think of a particle counter as a bathroom scale and AirAnswers as a body composition test. Particle counters will show an increase or decrease in air particles, but they won't tell you what has been reduced and what is still there.
